There's a movie called The Gathering. It's a story about the people who came to watch Jesus die on the cross. They were damned to live through history witnessing every major disaster
and killing. A very poignant look at our lives. Just like the characters in the film, we feed on the devastation and disaster of others. We find a thrill in seeing what new hell has been visited on mankind.
No one really watches NASCAR for the sport. There's no thrill in driving in circles, let alone watching someone else do it. They want to see a mass collision, or they will settle for one driver
smashing into a pristine, white wall. God bless Dale Earnhardt.
Sunday's football game is turned up not to hear John Madden shouting like an idiot, but rather to hear the thundering crash of pads during each block and tackle. If luck is on our side, we
may even bask in the silence of the crowd as we wait to see if the injured player will really get up from the field.
We watch the ticker on CNN to see if any more bridges collapse in Minnesota, if any more of Iowa's 99 counties are flooded, or if another rash of violence will hit our schools.
Now, I sit on balcony of the Davenport Skywalk, watching old ladies talk about getting dizzy at the height...yet they still come to see the flood waters drenching businesses and shutting down
commerce. Daycare groups, learning at an early age to gawk at the gross and obscene.
I am not innocent, a product of the same society, but I am aware. Are they more disturbing, or am I for knowing and continuing to snap pictures?
